Translation

At Japanese elementary schools, students eat "kyushoku" at noon.

It is a happy time when the whole class eats the same food.

Helpers on duty in white uniforms and caps hand out the food.

The main dish is rice, along with milk, vegetables, fish and more.

Before eating, the children wash their hands and say "Itadakimasu".

After the meal, everyone cleans the classroom together.

Do Japanese students serve their own school lunch?

Japanese school lunch — kyushoku — began in the Meiji era and is now served across the whole country.

Students eat together in their own classroom rather than in a canteen. The pupils on duty put on white uniforms and serve the food to their classmates themselves. The menu is decided for nutritional balance and typically combines rice, milk, vegetables, and fish or meat.

What makes kyushoku unusual is that it is treated as teaching, not catering. Alongside feeding children it is meant to build gratitude toward the people who grew and cooked the food and toward nature itself. This is part of shokuiku — food education — through which children learn what a healthy meal looks like and how to be thankful for it.

This story is written at six Japanese school-grade levels, so you can read it in real Japanese at whatever level you are now, with furigana over the kanji and an English translation beside it.

What is shokuiku?

Shokuiku means food education. Kyushoku is part of it: children learn what a nutritionally balanced meal looks like and are taught gratitude toward the people who produced and cooked the food.

Why six school grades, and not N5–N1?

Because that is how Japanese children learn to read. Japan's Ministry of Education fixes exactly which character belongs to which grade — so "grade 3" is a boundary you can verify, not a feeling. Every article here is machine-checked: if a single character sits above its grade, it is not published.

The result: you never hit a character you have not learned. That is the whole reason this product exists.
