On summer vacation mornings, radio exercises begin all over Japan.

The broadcast runs every morning from six thirty.

Children gather at the neighborhood park and move their bodies together.

They swing their arms wide and breathe in deeply.

Blood circulation improves, and the day starts pleasantly.

When it ends, they get a stamp on their card.

How long does radio taiso actually take?

On summer mornings people gather in parks and open squares all over Japan and do radio taiso together. The exercises were created in the third year of the Showa era and spread by the state as a way of protecting public health.

At six thirty every morning the same music plays from the radio. Exercise No. 1 runs through thirteen movements in about three minutes: swinging the arms and breathing deeply improves circulation and loosens muscles and joints. Moving in the morning light also helps steady the body's internal rhythm, which is why it is said to help you sleep at night.

For children on summer vacation there is a card: each time they turn up they get a stamp. That small ritual also makes radio taiso one of the few regular chances for children to get to know the older people living around them.

This story is written at six Japanese school-grade levels, so you can read it in real Japanese at the level you are now, with furigana and an English translation.

Why do Japanese children get stamps for radio taiso?

During summer vacation children carry a card and collect a stamp each time they attend. It keeps attendance going and brings children and neighbourhood elders together regularly.

Why six school grades, and not N5–N1?

Because that is how Japanese children learn to read. Japan's Ministry of Education fixes exactly which character belongs to which grade — so "grade 3" is a boundary you can verify, not a feeling. Every article here is machine-checked: if a single character sits above its grade, it is not published.

The result: you never hit a character you have not learned. That is the whole reason this product exists.
